NOJA Power Reclosers Used In Substation For Remote Control And Feeder Protection

Although pole-top reclosers are traditionally used to isolate sections of feeder when faults occur, they can also be used in substation applications.

One of NOJA Power's pacific island customers recently used three reclosers in a power station/substation environment. This was done primarily to gain SCADA control over the feeders.

In this particular case it would have been much too expensive to convert the ageing, manually operated switchgear located inside the power station to SCADA enable them. Instead, OSM reclosers were located immediately after these units. Protection was graded to ensure the reclosers operated before the power station breakers. A multi-dropped RS485 network is used to achieve remote control and indication for the central control centre.

The power station is located in a region where significant load growth is occurring as a result of increased tourism. New resorts are being built in the area and this is resulting in an increased demand for quality of supply.

OSM27 Installed In Substation By NOJA Power Installation Team

NOJA Power's installation team recently completed replacing a 27 year old recloser with a new OSM27 in a small substation. The old device had developed a fault in the controller and was not repairable. The customer chose NOJA Power to install the OSM27 on their behalf.

NOJA Power provided a complete service to the customer including training, removal and disposal of the old equipment, installation of the new OSM, protection analysis and design, programming, SCADA system integration and a complete clean up of the site when finished. In addition the job had to be finished within a set time to ensure supply was re-connected on time.

The new recloser was installed onto a substation mounting frame supplied by NOJA Power. The 22kV connections were made using insulated cable tails and bird guards to provide a fully insulated termination. Surge arrestors were also supplied and fitted to the recloser using the integrated mounting points.

The end result was a trouble free installation that went smoothly and finished on time. NOJA Power have a wide range of experience with recloser installations and ensured critical elements such as earthing and terminations were done correctly to provide a trouble-free lifetime.
